Comparing Myself To Others

Thursday, September 07, 2017

Good Morning!
I hope you're having a fab week.

Do you ever lay in bed trying to fall asleep and you instantly start over thinking absolutely everything that's going on in your life, whether it's the smallest and most irrelevant thing or something extremely important to you? Yep, me too and tonight is one of those evenings. So it's 22:35pm, I go back to work tomorrow so ideally I should have been asleep at least an hour ago but instead I'm laying in bed thinking about why everyone is so much better at everything than myself and pretty much comparing every little thing.

Comparing myself to others used to happen a lot during school and college when I was bullied and when you're bullied because of how you look or because of the the things you like or dislike; you do begin to think anyone else is better than who you are. However, luckily this I have slowly come out of and it's on a very rare basis when I sit here over thinking, comparing myself to so many different people.

On really good days when I'm feeling super positive, I can completely understand and see fully what I have achieved in a short space of time and I compare myself to others but in a good way. I can see how I've grown and I can see what I have achieved and on a good day; I feel absolutely great and it motivates me to keep going. But on a bad day, I have to remind myself before I over think too much that I am doing a great job at everything I do and how different things happen for various different reasons; sometimes life gets in the way and that's okay.

But why do I spend so much time over thinking and comparing myself to others in a negative way when I know full well that I shouldn't be because I know I'm doing a great job?

Something I have found to really help me getting through the "comparing myself to others" all the time is to set goals and push myself a lot more than what I usually would. I push to whatever I'm capable of doing because it motivates me in the long run and keeps my mind off anything else which is going on around me. For instance; blogging everyday is a great way to push yourself and to see what you're capable of doing in a short space of time. From blogging everyday I have learnt a lot and grown a lot with it.

Although comparing yourself to others is completely normal and nearly everyone does it; why do we spend so much time comparing instead of praising ourselves for what we've achieved?

I'll see you soon

  1. Love your point on setting goals for yourself to steal your focus from others! So important and helpful, it's much better to do you, than rather be someone else!
